Paragon Geophysical will soon begin a 2D and 3D seismic survey in portions of Townships 2S, 3S, and 4S, Ranges 4W and 5W in the West Bay Area of Allen Parish. We want to share clear, straightforward information about what this work involves, when it will occur, and how you can learn more.

Project Overview of the Survey

The project includes:

  • A 108 linear-mile 2D seismic survey (What is a linear mile? Click here.)

  • A 28.31 square-mile 3D seismic survey

Paragon Geophysical will mobilize their equipment starting on Monday, February 23. Work is tentatively scheduled to begin March 2 and continue through early May.

Seismic surveys are conducted to help companies better understand local geology. The information collected is used for planning and evaluation purposes. In this case, it will be used to understand the geology for a proposed carbon capture and storage project.

How the Survey Works: The survey uses modern technology designed to be temporary and minimally disruptive.

Geophysical Survey Process
Geophysical Survey Process

2D Survey

  • Trucks and sensors work along lines.

  • Sensors are placed approximately 82.5 feet apart along each line.

3D Survey

  • Sensors are spaced 82.5 feet apart in a grid pattern.

  • Receiver lines are spaced approximately 495 feet apart.

  • Vibration points are placed approximately 41.25 feet apart, primarily along existing roads and trails within the project area.

Ground Sensors: Small ground sensors or nodes will be placed at regular intervals along planned survey lines. These sensors record micro vibrations (imperceptible to humans) in the ground.

Vibration Trucks: Specialized vibration trucks will travel primarily on existing roads and trails. These trucks will stop and send gentle energy waves into the ground for 30 seconds or less. The ground sensors then record how those waves reflect back from underground rock layers.

 Access and Land Use

  • Existing roads, trails, and rights-of-way will be used whenever possible.

  • You may see small survey teams on foot or in utility vehicles (including UTVs) placing recording equipment nodes temporarily along planned survey lines. The equipment is marked, per Louisiana’s regulation.

  • Work in any one area will be short-term.

  • No permanent roads, structures, or changes will remain after the survey.

  • Any effects will be temporary and limited to the immediate survey paths.

We appreciate the opportunity to keep you informed and look forward to answering any questions you may have.
